Surface tension and fingering of miscible interfaces

چکیده
Experiments on miscible, buoyantly unstable reaction-diffusion fronts and non-reacting displacement fronts in Hele-Shaw cells show a fingering-type instability whose wavelengths (λ) are consistent with an interfacial tension (Σ) caused by the change in chemical composition, even though the solutions are miscible in all proportions. The relation Σ ≈ K/τ , where τ is the interface thickness and K ≈ 4 ± 2 x 10 dyne, enables prediction of our measured λ and results from many prior experiments. These results indicate that even for miscible fluids, surface tension is generally more significant than diffusion in interfacial stability and flow characteristics. Off-equilibrium surface tension in colloidal suspensions.
We study the fingering instability of the interface between two miscible fluids, a colloidal suspension and its own solvent. The temporal evolution of the interface in a Hele-Shaw cell is found to be governed by the competition between the nonlinear viscosity of the suspension and an off-equilibrium, effective surface tension Γe. By studying suspensions in a wide range of volume fractions, ΦC, ...
متن کاملViscous Fingering in Miscible, Immiscible and Reactive Fluids
With the Lattice Boltzmann method (using the BGK approximation) we investigate the dynamics of Hele-Shaw flow under conditions corresponding to various experimental systems. We discuss the onset of the instability (dispersion relation), the static properties (characterization of the interface) and the dynamic properties (growth of the mixing zone) of simulated Hele-Shaw systems. We examine the ...
متن کاملHybrid Simulation of Miscible Mixing with Viscous Fingering
By modeling mass transfer phenomena, we simulate solids and liquids dissolving or changing to other substances. We also deal with the very small-scale phenomena that occur when a fluid spreads out at the interface of another fluid. We model the pressure at the interfaces between fluids with Darcy’s Law and represent the viscous fingering phenomenon in which a fluid interface spreads out with a ...
متن کاملSurface tension in a reactive binary mixture of incompressible fluids
Based on the Cahn-Hilliard free energy, a thermodynamic model for a reactive binary mixture of incompressible and miscible fluids is derived with a distributed form of surface tension. The model describes chemistry, diffusion, viscosity and heat transfer as well as stresses produced by (and at right angles to) concentration gradients. It allows for a rich spectrum of processes and some of these...
متن کاملViscous fingering in liquid crystals: anisotropy and morphological transitions
We show that a minimal model for viscous fingering with a nematic liquid crystal in which anisotropy is considered to enter through two different viscosities in two perpendicular directions can be mapped to a twofold anisotropy in the surface tension. We numerically integrate the dynamics of the resulting problem with the phase-field approach to find and characterize a transition between tip sp...
